An Introduction to Lifecycle Psychology

We are Clinical/Practitioner Psychologists and Systemic Practitioners with extensive NHS and private sector experience. We first worked together in the NHS, where we developed a shared focus on parent-infant mental health and supporting families through complex transitions.

Emma Goodman

I am a Clinical Psychologist specializing in supporting the psychological aspects of the transition to parenthood and early childhood relationships. I have been qualified for over 20 years and practiced extensively in the NHS, Local Authority & charity sectors.

I am a compassionate therapist who supports my clients to understand and express the difficulties they are experiencing. I believe that to trust in therapy requires people to feel that they are safe and will not be judged. I believe that all people should receive high quality therapeutic support when they are in need and that therapy should help people to help understand and integrate their difficult experiences so that they can get back to living their lives. I have a particular interest in supporting communities who often do not access therapeutic care, to feel their belief systems are respected.

I have extensive experience of working with families who have intergenerational experiences of trauma & with children who present with symptoms of complex trauma. I draw on the latest evidence base in my clinical practice and have a focus on understanding the impact of attachment and trauma on a client’s presentation. I take a psychodynamic and systemic approach to my practice & focus on understanding early life experiences and environmental influences on current wellbeing. I have further training in mentalisation and mindfulness approaches alongside trauma focused models such as EMDR. I use attachment focused interventions such as VIG & Developmental Dyadic Psychotherapy (DDP). I am a qualified VIG supervisor.

In the NHS I have worked extensively across Parent-infant & Under 5’s mental health services, Perinatal Mental health services & Child & Adolescent Mental Health services. I was the Clinical Lead at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust offering clinical leadership, supervision and support to Local Authority Child and Adolescent Mental Health services.

I provide consultation and support to Social work teams & multi-agency networks to consider the psychological understanding of the families they are working with and have provided Trauma informed practice training to Local Authority and school settings. I am a visiting lecturer at the UCL Clinical Psychology Training course.
I am currently working in a Charity offering therapeutic support to children and their families who are adopted or cared for under a Special Guardianship arrangement.

Jess Elmer

I’m a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience of working with people at different stages and transitions during their life. I have worked in a range of NHS and private mental health services with adults, children and families. I currently work in the NHS leading a specialist team supporting people who have experienced trauma or relational challenges during their transition to parenthood and/or during the early years of parenthood. Alongside this, I work in the City of London supporting adults experiencing stress, burnout, and transitions in their professional and personal lives.

Across all these contexts, my practice is guided by the belief that therapy, in many different shapes and forms, can be very powerful in helping people at different moments in their life. Not only to recover from painful life experiences or mental health challenges, but also to go on and experience life more fully and reconnect with what matters to them. I strongly believe that therapy and other forms of psychological support shouldn’t be for the select few and that we can all benefit from a space with someone we trust to process our experiences.

At the core of my approach is a commitment to not defining people by the challenges they face, we are not our problems and our problems are strongly influenced by the world around us. When I meet someone I’m interested in their experiences, beliefs, culture, values, interests and resources. I think it’s essential to know more about these things when trying to understand someone and what has brought them to therapy. I believe that trust is fundamental to change and I pay careful attention to what I can do to help develop trust within the therapeutic relationship. I understand this won’t be the same for everyone and we also need different things to help us feel safe.

As a Clinical Psychologist I’m trained to use a range of psychological theories in my work and I spend time considering what might suit someone based on their needs. My clinical work is informed by models including attachment theory, developmental psychology, trauma theory, and systemic theory. I’m an accredited supervisor and trainer in a video feedback intervention called ‘Video Feedback to Promote Positive Parenting’ (VIPP) which can be used when a parent might be struggling with aspects of their child’s behaviour or wants help to build their connection with their child. I’ve completed further training in Systemic Family Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. I have a strong interest in trauma and considering how systems and the society that surrounds us influences our mental well-being.

In addition to direct clinical work, I teach, supervise, and consult with other professionals in the field of parent–infant and early years mental health, contributing to service development and workforce training.

Emma Goodman

I am a Chartered Psychologist and Systemic Practitioner, with over 15 years’ experience supporting children, young people, families, and organisations. Since qualifying in 2009, I’ve worked across the NHS, local authorities, and private practice- bringing together clinical expertise with a deep commitment to making psychological support more accessible, inclusive, and meaningful.

My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and relational. I draw on systemic and psychodynamic approaches, and am particularly interested in how early experiences, relationships, and social contexts shape the ways people understand themselves and others. I aim to create a reflective, non-judgemental space where patterns can be explored and new ways of relating can emerge. I also integrate a range of evidence-based models, including CBT, EMDR, ACT, CFT, Narrative Therapy, DDP, and mindfulness-based approaches, while maintaining a strong focus on relationships, attachment, and the wider systems people live and grow within.

In addition to direct therapeutic work, I have led the design and development of universal and specialist services aimed at promoting equity, impact, and meaningful reach. My work focuses on enhancing engagement and accessibility for people who may find it difficult to access psychological support, with an emphasis on destigmatising help-seeking and removing systemic barriers to care. My practice is grounded in an anti-oppressive and social justice frameworks, actively considering the ways that power, privilege, and marginalisation shape people’s experiences and opportunities. I also provide consultation, training, supervision, and expert assessments across complex educational, legal, health, and organisational contexts, including training and consultancy to organisations seeking to develop psychologically informed, trauma-aware, and inclusive practices.

I have a particular interest in working with LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples, as well as with people who are exploring questions or dilemmas around becoming parents.
Above all, my practice is guided by the values of equity, curiosity, and respect. Fundamental to my practice is the belief that with the right support, people and systems can grow, adapt, and thrive.
